What's Inside a Cheese Squishy? (And Is It Safe?)
The short answer
There are two builds, and both are sold as cheese squishies. Most are moulded slow-rise foam all the way through, with no cavity and nothing to find inside. Others are a soft outer shell filled with a gel, a thick liquid or a petroleum-jelly-type compound, which feels heavier in the hand and comes back more slowly.
We sell both. If you want to know which one a given piece uses, ask us before you order and we will tell you what we know about that item. That is the part most sellers leave out.
What is inside a cheese squishy?
Cut a moulded foam piece in half and you find exactly one thing: foam. The yellow colour and the little holes are printed and moulded into the piece, not painted onto a shell over something else. The slow 3 to 6 second rise comes from air moving back into the foam cells.
Cut a filled piece and the contents come out. The shell is doing the shaping and the filling is doing the squeezing — the slow return comes from the filling moving back into place, not from air. There is no reward for opening one, and no way to close it again.
Across the whole category, squeeze toys fall into roughly three families:
- Foam-filled. Solid all the way through, light for its size, holds a dent for a few seconds. This is the classic slow-rise type.
- Gel or liquid-filled. A soft shell around a thick, slow-moving filling. Heavier and often cooler to the touch than foam.
- Glitter or bead-filled. The same shell, with glitter suspended in gel or small water beads inside. You can usually hear them move.
A quick test: pick it up and press it. Foam is noticeably light for its size and dents dry. A filled piece has weight to it, feels cool, and you can sometimes feel the contents shift under the surface.
Is the stuff inside a cheese squishy safe?
We can only speak for our own products, and we would rather be precise than reassuring.
Our foam pieces are polyurethane foam with added colourants. Our filled pieces use a soft PU or plastic shell around a gel, a thick liquid or a petroleum-jelly-type compound. All of these materials are widely used in squeeze toys. None of them are food, and none should go anywhere near the mouth.
No material is free of risk for every person. Prolonged skin contact with foams, plastics or oil-based compounds can cause redness, itching or a rash in sensitive people, and rarely an allergic contact reaction. We do not market our products as latex-free, fragrance-free or hypoallergenic, and we do not claim they are. If you have a known sensitivity to polyurethane foams, soft plastics, plasticisers, mineral oils, petroleum-based compounds or synthetic dyes, do not use them.
On a filled piece there is one extra rule: never cut, pierce or over-stretch it. If the shell splits, keep the contents away from eyes, mouth and broken skin, wash your hands, and bag the item.
For a squishy from another brand, the honest answer is that you cannot know what is inside without the packaging. Treat any unknown filling as something that should never reach eyes, mouth or broken skin.

What is inside the big cheese block squishy?
The large cheese-block shape that spread on social media is the one people ask about most. Large blocks are usually foam rather than filled — a filled shell that size would be heavy, would sag and would put real strain on its seams. If your block is light for its size and holds a fingerprint for a few seconds, it is foam.
On our own listings the measured size is given in inches and centimetres, and we will confirm the build of any piece if you ask us first.
What happens if a squishy splits or tears
Foam tears if it is over-stretched, punctured or pressed against a sharp edge, and old foam can crumble. A filled piece can split at a seam. If either happens:
- Take it away from children and pets straight away.
- Do not let loose foam or escaped filling reach eyes or mouth. Rinse skin with water.
- If the piece was a filled one, keep the contents off broken skin, wash your hands with soap and water, and do not try to reseal it.
- If a fragment or any filling gets in an eye, rinse with clean water for several minutes and seek medical advice.
- If a fragment or any filling is swallowed, seek medical advice or call your local poison control centre.
- Bag it and dispose of it with household waste. Do not repair it with glue or tape.
Safety in one minute
- Ages 14 and over. Our squishies are collectible display and fidget items, not children's toys. They contain small parts and are a choking hazard for young children.
- Not food. They look like cheese. They must never go in the mouth.
- Never heat or freeze one. No microwave, hot water, radiator or parked car in the sun. Heated material can deform and cause burns, a filled piece can burst, and frozen foam turns brittle and tears.
- Never cut or pierce one. On a foam piece there is nothing inside to find and you will ruin the rise. On a filled piece the contents come out.
