How to Fix a Popped or Hard Cheese Squishy

Most “broken” cheese squishies are not broken. They are cold, dusty or dry, and they come back. The two things that genuinely cannot be fixed are a tear in the outer skin and foam that has gone hard from heat or sunlight. Everything else is worth ten minutes.
Why is my cheese squishy hard?
In order of how often it happens:
- The room is cold. Slow-rise foam is temperature sensitive. Below roughly 18°C the rise slows right down and the piece feels stiff. Warm it in your hands for a minute or leave it in a normal room for an hour and it will come back. This is not a fault.
- It has been in the sun. UV hardens the foam and yellows the print. This one is permanent — sunlight damage does not reverse.
- It got hot. A radiator, a car dashboard or hot water permanently changes the foam structure. Also not reversible.
- It is dusty. A layer of lint stiffens the surface and makes it feel tacky. This one cleans off.
- It is simply old. Foam has a life. Years, if it was good foam and kept out of the light.
A windowsill is the single worst place to keep one. Cold reverses in an hour; a few weeks in direct sun does not reverse at all.
How to get air out of a cheese squishy
People search for this a lot, so here is the honest mechanics: on a solid slow-rise foam squishy there is no air pocket to remove. The whole piece is foam, and the air is inside millions of tiny cells — that is exactly what makes it rise.
What people usually mean is that the piece is rising unevenly or has a lump. That comes from one of three things:
- It was stored squashed. Leave it uncompressed on a flat surface for 24 to 48 hours. Most lumps settle out.
- It was folded in packaging. Same fix, plus gentle whole-hand squeezes — never pinching a single spot.
- The skin is punctured. If air is escaping through a hole, the rise will never be even again. See below.
How to fix a hole in a cheese squishy
We are not going to sell you a trick that does not work. A hole in the outer skin cannot be repaired.
Glue, tape and sealant all fail the same way: they set hard, they create a rigid edge, and the next squeeze tears the foam further along that edge. You end up with a bigger split and a hard lump where the repair was.
If a piece has torn:
- Take it away from children and pets — loose foam fragments are a choking hazard.
- Do not let fragments reach eyes or mouth. Rinse skin with water.
- Bag it and dispose of it with household waste.

Cleaning it properly
- Wipe with a barely damp cloth. Never soak it — foam holds water and takes days to dry through.
- Let it air dry completely before squeezing again. Squeezing wet foam drives water deeper in.
- No solvents, bleach, alcohol gel or abrasive cleaners. They strip the printed skin.
- No washing machine and no dishwasher, ever.
- For a tacky surface, a dry microfibre cloth first, then a barely damp one.
How to keep the rise for years
- Store it uncompressed and out of direct sunlight. A shelf, not a drawer full of things.
- Keep it at normal room temperature. Never a windowsill, a radiator or a parked car.
- Squeeze with a whole hand rather than pinching with nails.
- Keep it away from pets, jewellery, keys and rough surfaces.
- Retire it when the surface looks worn, sticky, cracked or discoloured.
